The art or science of writing a winning resume

The issue of writing a good resume is not obsolete, and current job market hard is smart to make the process down to an exact science.

Computers and the Internet have made it much easier for the old job-seekers to craft and distribute a resume.

But easier is not always better. In fact, there are again already achieved – in some cases, three pages and beyond.

Is the public relations people have more responsibilities? Or, word processing programs are making it easier, faster and more cheap to produce and distribute curricula long? Or, are long resume writers probably long-winded in person?

Good press releases

Follow the basic principles of journalism – who, what, when, where and why. In other words, short sentences that actually pass background facts.

The rule of two the page is still valid.

"Chronological" format (titles, company names, descriptions posts shown in the time of order) is the preferred format. However, people with many years of experience, often opt for the more abbreviated "functional" versions.

Arial and Times Roman are recommended sources. Sources of distraction and exotic are difficult to read. Be consistent in all sources.

Keep the bold, italics and underlining to a minimum. They are usually reserved for sub-headings that include company names, titles and dates. Use underscores that references to titles, appointments and such.

Use one inch margins top and bottom, and at least half an inch left and right margins. It is better to have more white space of many words.

Employment and / or career objectives are in line when the race direction is not obvious from reading the resume. Career highlights and summaries are also OK.

Avoid "cute" approach. No gifts (like a piece of Brie cheese with a note attached to "Big Cheese"), stunts (balloon / flower deliveries), teasers (telegrams delivered on it saying: "I have a great idea for a campaign. Hire today and tell you what ").

Resumes on tapes, CDs, albums and pages of high rag content are a nice touch, but expensive to produce and distribute. Keep it simple.

Word processing template resumes are certainly useful and acceptable to keep the writer in basic formatting guidelines.

Letters

Keeping a page.

Do not start your letter saying "If you are looking for someone with, etc etc" Well, look no further. "It is likely no doubt that our customers will look further.

As your high school teacher writing warned – do not sound too friendly to write a letter commercial. Maintain professionalism at all times.

And remember, most of the mail software has a spell checker and, in some cases, a grammar-checker. The use of them.

If you send your letter and resume via fax or U.S. mail, be sure to sign the document. It is a good personal touch in an impersonal otherwise digital world. By sending a letter by e-mail, closing the letter with your name typed.

Thank-you notes

Nothing in the computer world can replace a manuscript note of thanks. It is polite, is personalized, professional. Given the overabundance of email messages worldwide least of all employers will receive an e-mail thank-you note may be lost, suppressed or ignored. By sending his old-fashioned, is remembered for his good manners, besides all that I bring to the table, it must be assumed.

Job seekers do not need to spend a fortune, a box of letterhead and envelopes Simple local stationery store will have no problem. Keep your pre-stamped envelopes – this form is more difficult to slow for not having gone to the post office! Unless an interview was a complete disaster, or you are definitely interested in the job, take this additional step can be very helpful.

E-mail

In the area of information of the sender of the email address, your name and the word "resume" in the subject is sufficient.

If possible, send your letter and resume both in the body of the email and send it as attachment.

Avoid e-mail "priority" indicators. They are an alarmist tactic should be used only in emergencies or when the transmission of classified information.

The beginning of a search employment is a good time to change that "cool" email address to an identifier of a sound more professional. We have received materials people with email addresses with words dudes, studs, sluts, girls, friends, girls, love, and similar machines.

Unless you 're auditioning for Bond movie or ghost-writing the next book in Jackie Collins, to leave the personal things in a second direction, personal email.

For obvious reasons, home or private e-mail addresses are always preferable to that of his employer.

The request for an acknowledgment of receipt "is good, Moreover, the follow-up within a decent interval.

When in doubt, use a PC platform. Macs are fine, but may show some peculiarities to be read by a PC.

After putting the finishing touches to his letter and resume, send it to a friend to make sure it can be read and has no type of virus. Have a trusted partner double check to make sure it reads smoothly.

Finally, computer address books are very helpful. But it is easy to click the wrong name and send your resume to that person – the pregnancy is a serious risk or worse.

There you have it. When it comes to letter and resume, remember the old adage: "The more things change …"
