Art Exhibits Connecticut

I want to find "alternative" and the spiritual side of New York … dirty rock cafe, exhibitions, crazy, anyone?
I have not been New York City for over four years – the last time most of the only concerts in Chinatown. So this time I want to see as much as possible, but not every "normal tourist wants to see. I am not bound to anything, museums, skyscrapers, statues, etc. .. I hope to discover the unusual small shops along the Avenue, kickass tattoo artists and studios, grunge rock n 'roll places, computer stores, cafes, new age, spiritual gathering places, weird art galleries, Diners Club dedicated to Motorhead, and cool little space bar live music dreadlocks employees … lol you have an idea? I do not want to see what I saw here, replicated in New York – for example, count all the Starbucks I can find. I get to the heart of alternative culture NY. I am told is a great East Village place to start, but beyond that I do not know! My trip will include Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont also about the same thing with these places. No response is impressive. Cheers.
Definitely look at East Village / Alphabet City. Most of what is in Manhattan today, however, is very often. With property prices in the clouds seem to take over Manhattan Manhattan stores. I also look at Brooklyn. While it might be too hipster Williamsburg check for you. Take the L train to Bedford Avenue. If you stay in Manhattan, do not go above 14th Street – I have a feeling That would be too boring for what you are looking for.
